Module 4 - Award Writing
About the Module
Aim
The aim of this module is to provide sufficient knowledge of and practice in the writing of a final, reasoned and enforceable arbitration Award.
Delivery
This module is delivered by a mixture of home study and face-to-face tutorials. The module is delivered over a period of three months, and you will be required to attend two tutorials, each lasting 6 hours.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module you should be able to:
- Display a knowledge and understanding of how to write an enforceable, reasoned award that is legally satisfactory, clear, cogent, comprehensive and concise.
- Demonstrate an intelligent and intelligible use of language, grammatically correct and correctly spelt.
- Produce an effective, reasoned and enforceable award.
Assessment
There are two elements of assessment for this module.
- Assignment - 20% - consisting of an assignment to be submitted and marked before the second face-to-face tutorial when it will be discussed.
- Examination - 80% - an award writing Examination comprising a scenario in 2 parts, the first provided by email approximately one week before the examination date, the second provided at the beginning of a fixed 24- hour period during which the student produces and submits his Award by email on or before the end of the 24-hour period. These are available based on the Arbitration Act 1996 and international UNCITRAL. You must select which version you wish to take.
The pass mark is 70% of the total marks.
Who should take this module?
To participate in this module, you must:
- be a Member (MCIArb) of the Institute, and
- have passed or been exempt from Module 1 – the law of contract, tort and evidence at under-graduate level or the examination previously known as Part IIIA, and
- have passed:
- Module 2 – the law of arbitration or the CIArb examination previously known as Part IIB; and
- Module 3 – Arbitration Practice and Procedure or the CIArb examination previously known as Part IIIB (both papers). Or
- have passed the Accelerated Fellowship Programme (Unit 1).

CPD
The Law Society and the Bar Council of England and Wales have accredited the Course for 12 hours CPD. If CPD accreditation is required for other organisations, we will be pleased to provide a Certificate of Attendance. Please ask for this on the application form.
