CIArb shares knowledge with China

May 12th 2006 – Today, a team from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), led by Deputy President, Hew Dundas, welcomed a delegation from China to its Secretariat in London. Chen Zhongqian, Director General of the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission, led the six-member delegation on a fact-finding mission to the UK.

One of the Delegation’s key objectives was to gain an insight into how the CIArb, a body working in the public interest, maintains the highest possible international standards whilst supporting users, professional advisors and individual practitioners.

The delegation was treated to practitioner’s views of the UK and international arbitration systems and learnt about the latest developments in dispute resolution.

Explaining how arbitration was used in Guangzhou and across China - often well before the West. A summary of the Commission’s work highlighted the importance of the region and the value of providing a timely, cost effective and private method of resolving disputes.

Both organisations agreed that there were a number of opportunities for potential future co-operation. Michael Forbes Smith, Director General of the CIArb said, “I hope that our new friendships in Guangzhou will facilitate future partnerships, and help us both achieve our objectives”.
