The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators demonstrates its global influence - three important events in one week!

· Press and photo opportunities - see below for more details

The international reach of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is clearly demonstrated this month with the organisation's involvement in three key events, all of which are highly significant in global terms. On May 10, CIArb is receiving a visit from a delegation from the premier Chinese arbitration organisation CEITAC; on May 12, CIArb is hosting the world-renowned ICCA Congress; and on May 16, it is providing training to a 30-strong delegation of Russian lawyers in partnership with the Anglo-Russian Law Association.

The most significant of these is the hosting of the ICCA Congress. A biennial event for the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), this is the first time the event has been held in London. Hosted by CIArb, and held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel from 12th to 15th of May, the conference will consider significant contemporary issues including the detection of forgery, money laundering, the psychological aspects of dispute resolution, arbitration under investment treaties and the issue of corruption within arbitration itself. About 500 international delegates will attend the Congress.

The event boasts a speaker line-up of some of the best legal minds from around the world including the ICCA president Fali S Nariman, a senior member of the Indian Senate: Donald Donovan from Debevoise & Plimpton in New York; Dr Shavit Matias, the Director of International Agreements and International Litigation Department at the Ministry of Justice in Israel; and Professor Karl-Heinz Bockstiegal, from Cologne in Germany. The UK is represented by the Rt Hon Lord Mustill, from Essex Court Chambers; Toby Landau and V.V. Veeder QC , both also from Essex Court; and Dr Julian Lew QC, from Herbert Smith.

Also speaking at the Opening Ceremony, held this year in the Great Hall at the Royal Courts of Justice, will be Lord Chief Justice Woolf; Lord Bingham of Cornhill; and CIArb's current president Karen Gough. Other speakers at the receptions during the week include the Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine of Lairg who will be the principal speaker on Tuesday 14th May, at the Gala Dinner held in the Great Hall at the Guildhall, London.

Two days before this event starts, CIArb is playing host to a delegation of Chinese trade specialists and lawyers, representing CCPIT (China Council for the Promotion of International Trade) and CIETAC (Chinese International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission). Earlier in the year, Karen Gough, the president of CIArb led a delegation to Beijing with the objective of building stronger links between the respective organisations. This visit to London provides an opportunity to continue their discussions aimed at further cementing the relationship between the organisations.

Finally, on the 16th May, at the end of one of CIArb's busiest weeks, the organisation will cooperate in training more than 30 Russian lawyers in areas of arbitration for Russia and internationally. At the end of the training and assessment, the Russian lawyers will be hoping to achieve CIArb accreditation, opening up the opportunity to deliver these services in Russia, thereby helping to further promote arbitration in Russia and enabling the country to develop as a viable territory for inward investment.

All of these events confirm the Institute's status as the leading international provider of qualifications for arbitrators and other dispute resolvers. With 10,000 members in 86 countries, CIArb promotes and facilitates the determination of disputes in a broad range of commercial sectors including law, construction, shipping, engineering, finance, travel, insurance, commodities, media, medicine, music and entertainment, health, IT, sport, and the automotive industry.
