CIArb Actively Participates in ICC's International Commercial Mediation Competition

On 15th – 19th February 2007, the CIArb attended the International Chamber of Commerce’ (ICC) International Commercial Mediation Competition, where the CIArb was also a collaborator of the event. Whether they were mock mediating or judging, the CIArb and its members were ever-present at the competition, which took place at ICC’s headquarters in Paris.

This year’s competition attracted 20 teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. A similarly diverse mix of legal experts from 14 countries participated as mediators and judges of the event.

Among the judges were the CIArb’s Colin J Wall, Immediate Past President of the CIArb, Alan Limbury, Chairman of the Mediation Sub-Committee and Mercedes Tarrazon, a Member of the Board of Management.

Observing, Colin Wall, Immediate Past President of the CIArb and a member of the drafting committee, said:

“It is a great privilege to work with ICC on this competition which illustrates the importance of mediation in resolving international business disputes. The CIArb is delighted that so many of our members from both common law and civil law backgrounds were able to participate and that we were able to offer prizes of free annual subscriptions to the CIArb’s journal, ‘Arbitration: The International Journal of Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Management’, to the winners and runners-up.”

Commenting, Anne Marie Whitesell, Secretary General of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and head of ICC’s Dispute Resolution Services, said:

“This annual competition is a way for us to help educate tomorrow’s law professionals about the full range of dispute resolution mechanisms designed for international business disputes. We are gratified by the success of this year’s event in attracting such high calibre participants from such a range of countries.”

2. About international Commercial Mediation Competition
Teams were divided into claimants and respondents in a mock up of a real mediation situation, with each team member required to act as either counsel or client. Competitors were required to apply ICC Amicable Dispute Resolution (ADR) Rules to solve problems devised by a special drafting committee of mediation experts.

3. About ICC www.iccwbo.org
ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) is the voice of world business championing the global economy as a force for economic growth, job creation and prosperity.

Because national economies are now so closely interwoven, government decisions have far stronger international repercussions than in the past.

ICC - the world's only truly global business organization responds by being more assertive in expressing business views.

ICC activities cover a broad spectrum, from arbitration and dispute resolution to making the case for open trade and the market economy system, business self-regulation, fighting corruption or combating commercial crime.

ICC has direct access to national governments all over the world through its national committees. The organization's Paris-based international secretariat feeds business views into intergovernmental organizations on issues that directly affect business operations.
