CIArb President Visits Dubai
May 2007 - The President, Hew Dundas, visited Dubai from 28th April to 3rd May, in part as the guest of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA).
Hew Dundas attended and contributed to the bilingual joint Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and ICCA Conference, “The International Effectiveness of Arbitral Awards” which included significant contributions from Arab colleagues. Following the conference, he visited the newly opened Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Court of which Sir Anthony Evans (CIArb Honorary President 1998-2001) is Chief Justice.
Following the conference, he attended a dinner hosted by DIAC where the principal guests were HE Prince Dr. Bandar Bin Salaman Al Saud, Advisor to the King of Saudi Arabia on arbitration matters, the Minister of Justice of Dubai and the Director General of the Dubai Courts.
Hew Dundas also attended and contributed to, an all-day roundtable hosted by Essam Al-Tamimi, Chairman of the UAE Branch, including Arab law academics, international arbitrators, UAE representatives and UAE government officials. The roundtable discussed the consequences of the UAE’s ratification of the New York Convention and the draft new Arbitration Law.
Hew Dundas also visited Dr Hussam Talhuni, Director DIAC, for discussions which proved very positive, fraternal and productive.
Commenting, Hew Dundas said:
“The pace of development in Dubai and in the rest of the UAE is truly staggering, driven by a “get-it-done” approach which is reflected in the huge strides that the UAE is making to become a world-class player in the arbitration landscape, inter alia through having ratified the New York Convention and with a new arbitration law approaching completion. The CIArb will be very proud to have played a part in this great project.”
