Hew Dundas visits South America

“Arbitration and mediation is integral to the civil justice system in South America ” ,
says President of the CIArb

CIArb President is Key Guest at New International Arbitration and Mediation Centre in Ecuador

July 2007 - Hew Dundas, CIArb President, was invited to speak at the opening of the newly-created Centro Internationales de Arbitraje e Mediación (CIAM - International Arbitration and Mediation Centre) in Quito, Ecuador. While in Quito he also met to discuss key developments in international dispute resolution with the local Bar Association, the Ecuadorean-British Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce of Pichincha, and the Universidad San Francisco of Quito.

Following his attendance at CIAM’s opening, Hew Dundas visited Bogotá, Colombia, and La Paz, Bolivia, where he met the Vice-Minister of Justice of Bolivia and senior officials from the Supreme Court, the Council of State, Deans of Universities, Chambers of Commerce, Arbitration and Conciliation Centres and Bar Associations to discuss the provision of dispute resolution services, with particular focus on what the CIArb can do to assist. All these meetings were very well-received and positive. Hew Dundas also called upon the President of the Supreme Court of Ecuador who also offered the CIArb a warm and positive welcome.

As a consequence of these visits, the CIArb is considering how best to develop a membership network accross South America to assist in the development of dispute resolution there. The CIArb is also considering how to better develop the provision of member services in Spanish and proposes to become a leading contributor to South America’s sole arbitration law journal.

Commenting on his trip to South America, Hew Dundas, said:

“I have been greatly honoured to have attended CIAM’s opening as a principal guest and am very touched at the warmth with which the CIArb was received in all three countries. Arbitration and mediation is integral to the civil justice system in South America and I am very confident that the CIArb will continue to strengthen the positive relationships created with the key figures in South America.”
