A Growing Trend Towards Mediation

CIArb Re-launches Journal and Dedicates First Issue to Mediation

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the international organisation of excellence for private dispute resolution, is proud to announce the re-launch of their Journal with the new title, Arbitration: The International Journal of Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Management. The first issue, to be published in February 2007, will be specifically dedicated to Mediation. The new name and format is designed to emphasise the broad range of the Institute’s activities, which, in addition to Arbitration, covers mediation and all forms of private dispute resolution.

The Institute changed its Royal Charter and Bye-laws to include all forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution, including Mediation. Today, a recent membership survey shows that 38% of the CIArb’s membership is now involved in Mediation. The re-launch and new title of the Journal reflects these developments, as does the fact that, the first edition of the newly named Journal has been devoted specifically to Mediation.

This issue, which will include a range of topics, from mediation in its current state to in-depth research looking at mediation and its history, will offer those involved in mediation an exclusive insight into the profession and will act as an informant through the expert selection of contributors.

Commenting, Michael Forbes Smith, Director General of the CIArb, said:
“The CIArb is delighted to have the first issue of the newly named Journal dedicated to Mediation. The Institute has a duty to inform the growing number of members who are involved in mediation of their specialist subject, especially as there are no other learned publications solely dedicated to Mediation. This issue is a reflection of the Institute’s membership and the wealth of knowledge they hold in this area alone.”

“Mediation is becoming an increasingly popular mechanism for the resolution of disputes. This is why we are running a training course in May and hosting a seminar on Mediation in June, where all the contributors of the Journal have been invited to discuss the topics in depth along with other leading Mediators.”
