Some common Questions & Answers
about CIArb Pathways

I would like to upgrade from Associate to Member. How may I achieve this?

The standard route is to pass:

Module 1

law of obligations and civil evidence

Module 2

law of arbitration, or

(for candidates involved in UK construction) law of adjudication

If you have a recognised law degree, you are exempt from Module 1.

How do I upgrade from Member to Fellow?

The standard route is to pass:

  • Module 3
  • Module 4
  • Peer Interview

For candidates who became Member before the introduction of the Pathways Programmes, a recommended study programme has been designed to enable you to increase your knowledge of the law of obligations (contract & tort) and arbitration.

Alternatively you may wish to consider taking the Module 1 and 2 courses (with or without the assignments and examinations) to ensure that you are fully prepared for Module 3 and 4 which expects you to have a robust understanding and appreciation of the key relevant aspects of your jurisdiction’s legal system and approach to obligations and civil evidence that influence, shape or otherwise have a bearing on how disputes may be treated and resolved through arbitration; with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the law of arbitration.

I am a practising lawyer with experience of arbitration and mediation. What do I have to do in order to qualify as a Fellow?

The Pathways Programme includes Accelerated Routes to Member and Fellow. Further details are available as follows:

Route to Member: http://www.arbitrators.org/Courses/AcceleratedMember.asp

Route to Fellow: http://www.arbitrators.org/Courses/AcceleratedFellowship.asp

I am a Member with a Law degree which I understand exempts me from Module 1. How do I obtain confirmation of this exemption?

Please send details of your law degree, i.e. awarding University/College, name of degree as well as the result to Karen Murray – Member Services Assistant: kmurray@ciarb.org and it will be considered.

I want to register for one of the new modules but do not want to pay the full fee. May I please just pay for the workbook and examination?

Although we strongly advise against this course of action, if you wish to do so you may apply to purchase the workbook and examination for Modules 2, 3 and 4. Further details of charges and how to apply are available from Oksana Krumina – okrumina@ciarb.org

The modules include face-to-face tutorials and I cannot get to London. May I do the module by distance learning only?

At present we do not have adequate facilities to provide meaningful distance learning support. However, we are working with our Branches to be able to provide the face-to-face tutorials outside of London, including overseas.

I am thinking of signing up for one of the courses listed on your Exemptions webpage. In view of the new pathways, will these exemptions still be in place when I have completed the course?

The exemptions for the qualifications shown on our Exemptions webpage will remain in effect until a review of the qualifications takes place in early 2008. Further details following the review will appear on the website as soon as is practically possible after notification has been given to the provider of the qualification.

I have taken a course which has a dispute resolution module, can I get any exemptions? I wish to become a Fellow.

It is important for you to realise that in order to be given an exemption from a Module, you must be able to demonstrate that you have the equivalent knowledge to a candidate who has passed that Module.

If you wish to pursue exemption, please contact Karen Murray: kmurray@ciarb.org who will be pleased to supply you with a copy of the relevant course specification(s) so that you may send in evidence that you have achieved the educational objectives identified in the specification(s).

Please note that it is usual for a candidate seeking exemption from Modules 1 – 4 to have take an assessment (usually written) which was set at the same standard as the CIArb Modules.
