Presidential Panels

Presidential panels are panels of senior and experienced practitioners in the 3 disciplines of arbitration, mediation or adjudication.

These panels (or pools of people) are used to identify and nominate suitably qualified and experienced professionals who may assist in resolving civil or commercial disputes.

CIArb operates three panels:

  • Chartered Arbitrators
  • Accredited Mediators
  • Accredited Construction Adjudicators

All individuals who are members of one of these panels have demonstrated to CIArb that they have a suitable level of knowledge, skill and experience in their discipline, together with a commitment to ongoing personal professional development and to following high ethical and professional standards of conduct.

The downloadable 'The Guidance Edition 1.2009' explains what you need to know to be considered for appointment as an arbitrator, adjudicator or mediator by CIArb.

Presidential Appointments process

The Presidential Appointments process is one whereby requests are received by CIArb from parties requiring an arbitrator, mediator or adjudicator to be appointed.

The party is likely to have had a dispute resolution contract clause that nominates the President of CIArb to appoint (as appropriate to the clause) an arbitrator, mediator or adjudicator - hence the term "Presidential Appointment".

The President makes his/her selection (administered by CIArb's dedicated subsidiary IDRS) from the most qualified and suitable members of the Presidential Panel for the job.

Suitably qualified and experienced members of the Institute are eligible to apply to join these Panels.

Panel Appointment Certificate Scheme

A Panel Appointment Certificate Scheme ("PACS") was introduced in February 2009, with an implementation date of 30 April 2009.

The purpose of the Scheme is to demonstrate publicly that the holder of such a certificate is, in all respects, considered by the Institute to be competent in the field of Private Dispute Resolution (PDR), in a continuing basis, and as such is suitable for Presidential appointments or nominations.
