Patron, Presidents and Companions
Patron
A Patron can be appointed by the Board of Trustee, and will normally hold office for three years.
The Patron of the Institute need not be a member of the Institute, but is usually a well known and highly regarded figure in the private dispute resolution community.
Presidents
Each alternate year, CIArb elects a President, Deputy President and Vice President from Fellow grade members of the Institute, by the members' representatives at Congress.
The President takes up office each January and serves for one year, when the Deputy President takes over the role.
During the term of office, the President will have an ambassadorial role to promote the Object of the Institute, which includes attending official functions on behalf of the Institute, attending and speaking at Branch events, liaising with other professional bodies, lobbying of Parliament, and so on.
The President has only one managerial executive power, and that is to make President Panel appointments on behalf of the Institute (see Presidential Panels).
Companions
The Bye-Laws allow for any person who by reason of his distinction, position and experience in the field of private dispute resolution (PDR) or who appears to the Board of Trustees as being able to render important assistance in promoting the Object, to become elected as a Companion of the Institute.
There can be no more than ten Companions of the Institute at any one time, unless agreed by the members at an AGM.
