Profile

The European Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, established in 1992, is one of the Institute's largest branches, both geographically and in terms of the number of members. The branch covers all of continental Europe and has approximately 350 members.

It is the branch's breadth and diversity that places it in a unique position among the continent's other professional organisations in the arbitration and mediation field. The European Branch of CIArb is the only organisation in the field of ADR offering its members opportunities for training and networking across Europe and the chance to share their experiences.

Twice a year, the branch holds a conference in a different European city, bringing together ADR professionals from a variety of backgrounds and offering excellent networking opportunities. The branch established its first chapter in The Netherlands in 2003, and a further chapter has been formed in the Baltic region. The formation of other chapters is currently being considered in a number of locations, and the branch is also active in promoting the Institute's interests in Eastern Europe.

The branch's cosmopolitan nature is reflected in the composition of its committee. The Chairman is German, the Secretary is Italian and its Treasurer is from Scotland, now resident in The Netherlands. Other members of the committee hail from Austria, Germany, France, Latvia, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, and The Netherlands.

2008 Annual Report by Axel Reeg, Chairman.

In 2008, the European Branch held two meetings, the Spring Meeting in Istanbul and the Autumn Meeting in The Hague.

The Spring Meeting in Istanbul, held at the beginning of May in conjunction with the Lebanese Branch, was fabulously well organised by Bennar Belkaya. It had an extraordinarily high turnout in attendees and a highly interesting programme with a large number of speakers on very diverse topics, many of them, however, touching on the practice of ADR in the host country.

On the occasion of the Spring Meeting, the branch held its AGM which brought about a number of changes. Andrew Burr, very successful as chairman, handed over the lead of the branch to Axel Reeg. Several new committee members were elected, bringing the total number to 17 and two sub-committees were installed, one for programme planning, the other for financial planning. Further, the branch decided actively to encourage the creation of chapters, beyond the two existing ones in the Netherlands and the Baltics.

The Autumn Meeting at the end of October was a showpiece of excellent organisation, not only in terms of content, but also in respect of the format and the venue in the Peace Palace in The Hague. Having been responsible for this, Stuart Ness will serve as an example for organisers of future events. Immediately preceding the meeting, the Dispute Resolution Committee of the ABA held a "Mediation Leadership Summit" jointly organised with the branch.

The branch intends to hold training courses on the continent, jointly with domestic arbitration institutions in several countries.
