CIArb's first regional international conference took place in Sydney on 27 - 28 May 2011. The CIArb Asia Pacific Conference explored the challenges and opportunities for international dispute resolution in the Asia Pacific region. Over 200 delegates attended from across the world to hear from high profile speakers from the fields of government, industry, business and arbitration.
A word from Michael Forbes Smith
CIArb's Director General Michael Forbes Smith MCIArb made the following statement:
"Reviewing CIArb's first regional international conference, what can I say - it was a fantastic success, even though it's the DG himself who is saying it! Fully subscribed by eminent practitioners of a dozen or more nationalities from the region and beyond, the content and level of debate was unsurpassed.
Whether it was the Hon Justice Allsop giving insights from his personal knowledge of the development of Australian arbitration legislation; Chief Justice Spigelman on his last day in office critically dissecting Lord Hoffman's views on evidence, Lord Peter Goldsmith on incorporating technology in arbitration, the three in-house Counsels of BHP Billiton, Royal Dutch Shell (our own Peter Rees QC) and Lend Lease (the Australian Branch's Rashda Rana) on what the user wants from the process or the session presentations and discussions from our top-level speakers and delegates; every contribution was striking, original and thought provoking.
Many, many thanks to our stellar list of sponsors, led by Hinds Blunden, with the Government and Law society of New South Wales and eighteen senior Australian and interntional companies, legal firms and media partners. And the administration was superlative too. Well done CIArb!"
