Continuous Professional Development
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators - Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Scheme
As a professional body, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators encourages its members - arbitrators, adjudicators and mediators to undertake continuing professional development at all levels of membership. Although the scheme is only compulsory for Panel Members, it is hoped that all members will enjoy a programme of CPD. Members preparing for Panel Interviews and Interviews for Chartered Arbitrator may like to consider how appropriate CPD courses may assist.
It is widely accepted that CPD is an essential part of personal and professional development and to the provision of a quality service to the users of arbitration and ADR.
CPD is a commitment to lifelong learning and allows you to:
- keep your knowledge of the law up to date
- improve and update your current skills
- increase your awareness of the needs of the consumer
- keep up to date on changing market conditions
- keep up to date on the impact of government and EU policies
- learn new skills
- broaden your knowledge base
- meet professional colleagues
CIArb's CPD Scheme recognises that you may already be required to undertake CPD by your primary professional body. However, it is vital that your knowledge and skills as arbitrators, adjudicators and mediators is not neglected. CPD can only enhance your activities and assist professional success. It is part of good professional practice and will foster greater public confidence in your work.
This scheme is only compulsory for Panel Members and the new scheme will be self-certifying, relying on you to maintain a record of your activities. The Institute retains the right to call in your CPD returns at any time. If, on request, a Panel Member does not comply or is found not to have completed the necessary CPD, this will not lead to an automatic striking off from the Panel. However, it may be taken into account.
CIArb is committed to the continual progression of our members and hopes that the CPD Scheme will help engender a community of well-trained and skilled practitioners.
The next page provides the total number of CPD hours required as well as the activities that attract points.
