Chartered Institute of Arbitrators partners with Dubai Technology, E-Commerce and Media Free Zone to create Alternative Dispute Resolution System

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) today announced its partnership with the Dubai Technology, E-Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority to establish a bespoke dispute resolution system. The scheme, to be launched shortly, will cover domestic and international disputes within Dubai Media City and Dubai Internet City, the entities within Dubai Technology E-Commerce and Media Free Zone and will also encompass Freedom of Speech disputes. This project has been the result of an initiative by their then President, Dr. Nael Bunni, who led a delegation to the region last year.

The Dubai Technology, E-Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority under the chairmanship of His Highness, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is fast becoming the global media and IT hub.

Launched in October 2000, Dubai Internet City is the first complete Information Technology and Telecommunications enterprise to have been established in a free trade zone. It has already become the Middle East HQ for global leaders such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Microsoft.

Dubai Media City opened in January 2001 and today boasts over 300 regional and global media businesses from broadcasting, publishing, communication, production, post-production, music and multimedia sectors. Amongst the global players are Reuters, CNN, CNBC and MBC.

Further phases of both Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City are due for completion in 2002.

"Dubai has built an international reputation as a commercial hub and is strategically placed to offer organisations major market opportunities in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia." explained Dair Farrar-Hockley, Director General of CIArb. "The Dubai Technology, E-Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority has recognised that it needs to offer inward investors a reliable and recognised system for solving disputes. The Institute is delighted to be working with the Authority to design and establish an alternative dispute resolution mechanism that will provide the quality and speed of judgement demanded by the world's most sophisticated businesses."

Speaking on behalf of the Dubai Technology, E-Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority, Director General, Ahmad Binbyat, commented, "In the heart of Dubai we have created an infrastructure, environment and attitude that will enable enterprises to operate both regionally and globally with significant competitive advantages. To ensure we retain our competitive edge and to provide added value to our clients' activities, we have to establish an internationally recognised system for resolving disputes. The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators was our natural partner in designing a tailored procedure to meet the needs of our global business community."
