The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators appoints new director general
With 30 years of international experience working with business, diplomatic, political and academic communities on four continents, Mr. Smith’s most recent overseas position was as the first resident British ambassador in Tajikistan. Prior to that he was Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan. He has also held diplomatic positions in Germany, Switzerland and Ethiopia.
John Campbell, trustee of the CIArb and chair of the search committee, said: “I am delighted that Michael has joined the CIArb as an organisation that is responsible for the promotion of ADR across the globe. His extensive experience in international diplomacy will be vital to the future growth of the Institute.”
In his role as director general, Michael Forbes Smith will be responsible for raising the profile of private dispute resolution to businesses and governments globally and leading the Institute’s international development and education programmes.
Michael Forbes Smith, director general, CIArb, said: “I am delighted to be joining the pre-eminent global dispute resolution organisation at a particularly exciting moment in its history. Taking forward the Institute’s strategy for the 21 st Century, in Britain and throughout the world, is an exciting and challenging task to which I look forward immensely. I can assure them that in return that all my energies will be directed to the future progress of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.” |
