Lord Goldsmith opts for mediation at CIArb 24 September 2008 - Rather than attending the final day of the 2008 Labour Party Conference in Manchester, Lord Peter Goldsmith PC, QC, former Attorney General of England and Wales, delivered a keynote address to an international gathering of mediation professionals.
Speaking at the International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation - the London home of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) - Lord Goldsmith addressed almost 90 delegates at the heavily over-subscribed CIArb Mediation Symposium.
Lord Goldsmith highlighted the huge rise in the use of mediation, the expansion of its application beyond that envisaged when he and Lord Irvine first spoke about the Government’s ‘ADR Pledge’ in 2001 and the globalization of dispute resolution - particularly in light of the recent EU Mediation Directive.
The one-day CIArb Mediation Symposium features some of the world’s leading speakers on the subject. Eminent practitioners taking the podium include: Michel Kallipetis QC, Giovanni De Berti, and CIArb’s internationally acclaimed commercial mediation training faculty (comprising David Richbell, Jane Gunn and Aled Davies) who are hosting Practical Skills workshops during the afternoon session.
Within the audience sit mediation practitioners, legal advisors, academics and users of mediation processes - all of whom share a thirst for the latest news and developments in the field. Michael Forbes Smith, CIArb’s Director General commented “as CIArb continues to deliver some of the most comprehensively trained mediators available and having this year launched a route to Fellowship for mediators, it has firmly established itself, and fully matches its reputation for arbitration and adjudication in the field of mediation”.
A 'healthy' addition to CIArb
16 September 2008 - Starting her third week today, Nicki Alvey JP, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrator’s (CIArb’s) new Director of Membership and Marketing adds more than 25 years of invaluable marketing and communications experience to the world of dispute resolution.
Most recently at The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy as Interim Marketing Director, Nicki focused on member recruitment and retention strategies. Previously, while working with The Royal Institute of Public Health, she completed a Department of Health funded project to create a large network of training providers - attracting over 1,000 candidates to take the new qualification in ‘health improvement’.
Nicki’s extensive membership expertise has also benefited the National Housing Federation. Heading up their marketing and business development activities, Nicki led the development of key stakeholder relationships which provided substantial benefit to both the organization and it’s membership.
Nicki’s remit at CIArb includes raising the profile of the Institute in new sectors, promoting the benefits and services offered, and enhancing communications and support to users, members and branches across the UK and internationally.
Gaining insight into a variety of different sectors, Nicki has also worked for companies including: Brooke Bond Oxo, Capital Radio and Dunlop Slazenger International. Moving into the not-for-profit sector in the mid 90s, Nicki put her experience in marketing services, conference and exhibition organisation, sponsorship, advertising and sales promotion to good use - by generating income and improving the customer experience through enhanced/tailored member services.
