Experienced Practitioner Route to membership

CIArb's Accelerated and Experienced membership schemes offer the opportunity for individuals who have a background in arbitration to gain direct entry to the higher levels of CIArb membership by virtue of their experience.

This offers the dual benefits of allowing you to forego time-consuming training and gain access to membership benefits earlier.

Experienced Practitioner route to Fellowship (FCIArb)

This Experienced Practitioner Route (EPR) to membership provides highly experienced and renowned arbitrators with the opportunity of direct entry into the Institute at Fellow level. It is a special membership route only available to very exceptional individuals.

Suitable candidates must be able to demonstrate their experience in terms of knowledge, skill and length of time working in arbitration.

Candidates must:

  1. demonstrate that they have a level of arbitration knowledge and skill equivalent to that expected in CIArb's normal pathway to Fellowship;
  2. demonstrate at least 5 years' experience as a practising arbitrator, with this specifically including the drafting and making of awards, or;
  3. refer to experience as a court judge handling and hearing commercial or civil dispute cases involving arbitration, or to authorship of major texts on the subject of arbitration.

Suitable candidates who are interested in this route to Fellowship need to be proposed and seconded by two existing CIArb Fellows and complete an application form with evidence of their experience.

There is then an interview with a third Fellow, possibly with a request for the candidate to submit in advance a short report which sets out in more detail his/her arbitration accomplishments.

Experienced practitioners might also wish to consider applying for Chartered Arbitrator status.

For further details and to make an application, please contact CIArb's Member Services team on Tel: +44 (0)207 421 7430.
