Reflections on the Magna Carta and Wales

22 March 2017 Branch News

The year 2015 marked the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. This ‘great charter’ has influenced the judicial systems of not only England and Wales but numerous other countries across the world including the United States.

In doing so it stands out as one of the most significant documents in Western history. Yet the charter was signed between English barons and the English King John. So what was its relevance to Wales and elsewhere at the time and since?

To explain this Lord Igor Judge, the former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, reflected on the impact and influence of the Magna Carta at event which the CIArb Wales Branch helped to promote in December 2015.

In his talk, Lord Judger examined both how and why a charter signed eight centuries ago still manages to shape people's lives today.
