CIArb News / 14 June 2010

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is pleased to announce that it has appointed training group Facilit8 to provide its commercial mediation training for 2010 - 2013.

Facilit8, led by Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners ranked commercial mediators Amanda Bucklow FCIArb (Mediation) Amanda Bucklow1web.jpg and Charles Middleton-Smith, will deliver the training courses that make up CIArb's unique Mediation Pathway. Charles Middleton-Smith web1.JPG

The professional training programme provides globally-recognised qualifications in mediation, as well as arbitration and adjudication, leading to membership of the Institute at various grades, up to the gold standard of Fellowship of the Institute.

Commercial Mediation Training

The key element of the mediation training is CIArb's flagship 5 day core commercial mediation training and half day assessment. Successful completion of the training and accreditation allows candidates to apply to become Members of the Institute (MCIArb), following which they are awarded the qualification of CIArb Accredited Mediator. The next course and assessment begins on 1 November 2010.

Valuable skills

Amanda Bucklow said: "Most people who train as a mediator want to practise as a mediator and in this competitive world you need the best start possible. Nevertheless, mediation is an invaluable tool for professionals in many areas, and this course is equally suitable for those who need to manage conflict and disputes as part of their job.

"Becoming a CIArb Accredited Mediator demonstrates Membership of the leading professional organisation for ADR in the world, a professional endorsement which is unique in the field. We are delighted to be appointed as CIArb's training partner to build on the Institute's strong reputation in this area."

Features of the training

The 5-day mediation training will not only give candidates the skills and knowledge necessary to practise as a mediator, but also prepare them for building a business in mediation, with specialist pre and post-course mentoring. This will include training on the use of the latest technology and social media.

In partnership with CIArb, Facilit8 will also be developing CIArb's Mediation Pathway, which offers a complete route for the beginner to the experienced practitioner, right through to the gold standard of Mediation Fellowship of the Institute. Together, they will also be developing mediation training internationally through CIArb's branch network, to meet the growing demand for mediation globally.

Growth of the profession

Michael Forbes Smith, Director General of CIArb, added: "Mediation will have increasing relevance for businesses and individuals over the coming years, as cost-cutting measures in the private and public sectors increase the potential for contractual disputes. There is much more awareness of the benefits of mediation across all industries in resolving disputes cost-effectively and at an early stage, both of which are crucial to maintaining cash-flow. As the mediation profession becomes well-established, we anticipate the broad growth of the profession across many different types of business.

"The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' professional qualifications have set a benchmark for standards in ADR. As the leading professional organisation for ADR with 12,000 members and 33 branches worldwide, CIArb is uniquely placed to meet the increasing demand for professional mediators globally. Delivering high standards of professional training and education are vital to develop the market for mediation, and our partnership with Facilit8 will greatly strengthen our role in this important area."
