CIArb maintains unique profile at Vienna Vis Moot
CIArb News / 08 May 2009
For the second year running, CIArb has had a stand at the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
Now in its sixteenth year, the moot took place on 3-9 April at the Juridicum in Vienna, Austria. It is considered the most prestigious international arbitral mooting competition open to student bodies. The organisers made a special exception in allowing CIArb to exhibit at the event on the basis that the Institute is unique in its remit amongst other arbitral institutions.
The Vis Moot attracts some 200 practising international arbitrators of world renown. They give up days at a time to arbitrate, gratis, for some 240 teams from around the world. The integrity of this student-focused academic event is vigorously protected and enhances its reputation as a true global standard-setter. Sponsors of the event included: ClArb, ICDR, AAA, DIS, ICC, JAMS, LCIA, MAA, SIAC, ASA and UNCITRAL, reflecting the high standing the event enjoys within the international community.
Moot organisers, Professor Bergsten and Magistra Patrizia Netal, have embraced CIArb and recognised the value it can bring to such educational initiatives. Since 1997, ClArb has been sponsoring the event and, through its membership, providing high quality arbitrators and judges. The moot provides the premier opportunity for CIArb to engage with the current and next generation of arbitrators and arbitration practitioners. By actively supporting it, CIArb continues to fulfill its learned society and educational purpose under its Royal Charter.
Present at the event were: John Campbell QC, CIArb's 2009 President, Aaron Hudson-Tyreman, Director of Research & Development, Education & Training, and Zoi Fletcher, International & Professional Affairs Executive.
Once again, CIArb held a very successful reception sponsored by CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz. It again proved hugely popular, oversubscribing weeks in advance. President John Campbell QC spoke about the importance of CIArb's contribution to the event and similar educational initiatives. He was applauded for advocating CIArb's continuing role in promoting, facilitating and educating the message of ADR worldwide.
