CIArb members appointed QC

CIArb News / 26 February 2009

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is delighted to congratulate seven of its members who have been appointed to Queen's Counsel this year.

They are:

  • Raquel Agnello QC, MCIArb
  • Judith Gill QC, FCIArb
  • Timothy Hill QC, MCIArb
  • Robert Lawson QC, MCIArb
  • Charles Manzoni QC, FCIArb
  • Peter Rees QC, FCIArb
  • Christopher Smith QC, MCIArb

Peter Rees is a CIArb Fellow, Chartered Arbitrator and Chairman of CIArb's Board of Management, and one of three solicitor advocates appointed to take silk this year.

A partner in Debevoise & Plimpton LLP's European Litigation Practice, Peter has always conducted the majority of advocacy in his arbitration cases. He works in London in Debevoise's International Dispute Resolution Group, and has represented clients in international arbitration cases heard in many different jurisdictions.

Advocacy in arbitration

Commenting on his appointment, Peter said: "The main factor the panel takes into account when making their decision on your suitability as a candidate is the quality of your oral and written advocacy, including advocacy in arbitration, as well as court. As the vast majority of my work is arbitration, I have no doubt that the advocacy that I have undertaken before arbitral tribunals has helped enormously in my appointment as QC.

"CIArb Fellowship is probably the most widely recognized qualification in arbitration and other forms of private dispute resolution and is an assurance of quality for clients looking to engage counsel or neutrals in arbitration, mediation or adjudication."

High status

CIArb Director General Michael Forbes Smith said: "CIArb is delighted that the new QCs include so many of its members, which demonstrates the high status that arbitration and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators holds within the legal profession. The fact that three of the new QCs are solicitor-advocates demonstrates that the traditional image of a QC as a court-room barrister may be changing, and many of the world's top advocates are to be found in the fora of international arbitration and non-court dispute resolution."
