Mauritius stands tall as it launches branch

CIArb News / 23 November 2009

The Mauritius Branch of CIArb was formerly launched on 23 November 2009 by the Chief Justice of Mauritius, His Honourable Mr Bernard Sik Yuen in the presence of Immediate Past President John Campbell QC FCIArb and CIArb Director General Michael Forbes Smith MCIArb.

Leading venue for international arbitration

The launch of the branch is part of the country's objective of becoming a leading venue for international commercial arbitration. It has recently reformed its arbitration law with the International Arbitration Act 2008.

In his address, John Campbell QC said "there is no reason why Mauritius cannot stand tall in the world." He said Mauritius could become a leading venue for international commercial arbitration and he wished to see successful mediations in shipping, financial services, the tourism industry and elsewhere.

Background

Traditionally, construction disputes in Mauritius have been resolved by litigation. While there is a widespread assumption that disputes should be avoided, businessmen have had a general aversion to arbitration, being uncertain about its outcomes.

As part of CIArb's international branch network, the Mauritius Branch will encourage businessmen to adopt arbitration as a speedy, economical and just resolution of their disputes. It also hopes to raise public awareness about arbitration as a fair, expeditious and economic method. Its will seek to develop professional knowledge, help to grow the membership and raise the professional status of members.
