The Nigeria Branch YMG has engaged in two main activities recently:
- Annual Mock Trial
- Mentorship Programme
Annual Mock Trial
Since its inception in Nigeria, the Young Members Group of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria Branch), which is open to all members aged 40 years and below, holds its mock arbitration annually. Flowing from the outstanding performances of the YMG Nigeria Branch in this annual event, the group has since become a reference point for presentations of mock arbitration in Nigeria, as it is also usually invited by various other arbitration organisations to put up mock arbitration appearances at their events.
The 2017 Annual Mock Arbitration was held on Thursday, 30 March, 2017 at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus. The Mock Arbitral Tribunal included Mrs. Obosa Akpata FCIArb, Mr. Juwon Adenuga FCIArb, with the 2nd Vice Chair of the Nigeria Branch, Chief Gbola Akinola FCIArb C.Arb, as Presiding Arbitrator.
The Young Members Group under the Chairmanship of Mr. Greg Nwakogo is currently working with the Nigeria Branch Executive Committee to institute a mentoring programme aimed at creating an avenue for young members to be mentored thus, advancing the continuous availability of the crop of quality arbitrators.
The programme involves partnering young members, selected from the Young Members Group, with senior and more experienced members of the Nigerian Branch who are to encourage them, provide guidance on their respective arbitration careers and enhance their ease of access to role models.
