Education and Training

The Scottish Branch is now taking registrations for the 2010-2011 Winter Programme of Courses. The exact timetable for these courses will be established shortly, and will then be issued to those who have registered.

The following courses are offered:

Entry course - this is a one day course providing basic introduction to Arbitration, Adjudication and Mediation. Delegates are required to submit an assignment within 4 weeks of the date of this course. Successful completion of that leads to Associate Membership of the CIArb. The cost is £250.00. The next entry courses are on 4 November 2011 at Glasgow Caledonian University and 18 November 2011 Robert Gordons University.

Introduction to Arbitration - this is a one day course on Arbitration which includes a session on the new Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010. Delegates are required to submit an assignment within 4 weeks of the date of this course. Successful completion of that leads to Associate Membership of the CIArb. The cost is £250.00.

Introduction to Adjudication - this is a one day course on Adjudication. This course will cover the Adjudication process. Delegates are required to submit an assignment within 4 weeks of the date of this course. Successful completion of that leads to Associate Membership of the CIArb. The cost is £250.00.

Introduction to Mediation - this is a one day course on Mediation which will cover the Mediation process including a session on role playing etc. Delegates are required to submit an assignment within 4 weeks of the date of this course. Successful completion of that leads to Associate Membership of the CIArb. The cost is £250.00.

Pathway to Fellowship - for those who are Associate Members of the CIArb, and who wish to progress to Member, the Scottish Branch will run Module 1 which covers the Law of Contract, Delict and Evidence and Module 2, the Law of Arbitration. The courses are run by distance learning with a series of workshop sessions on each topic. Delegates are required to pass an examination for each module prior to moving onto the next Module. This course will run for approximately 10 months from commencement to completion. Successful candidates will then apply to become Members of the CIArb. The cost is £1200.00.

Pathway to Fellowship - for those who are Members of the CIArb, and who wish to progress to Fellowship, the Scottish Branch will run Modules 3 and 4 which cover the Law and Practice of Arbitration and Award Writing. The courses are run by distance learning with a series of workshop sessions on each topic. Delegates are required to pass an examination for each module prior to moving onto the next Module.

This course will run for approximately 10 months from commencement to completion. Successful candidates will then apply to become Fellows of the CIArb. The cost is £1200.00.

The Scottish Branch is also proposing to run a series of six short modules of 2 hours duration on the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010. These modules will cover all aspects of the Act. Interested candidates are requested in the first instance to contact the Scottish Branch Education Convener, Len Bunton either to register, or for a discussion on these proposed courses.
