Overview of the Course
This intensive course in International Maritime Arbitration is offered over nine days. Participants will be taught the practice of international maritime arbitration including major forms of international arbitration peculiar to the maritime industry, involving various maritime contracts and maritime conventions.

Participants will gain the skills and ability to appear as counsel or act as an arbitrator in the diverse context in which maritime arbitrations occur. Maritime experts will understand the legal approach taken by counsel and arbitrators in relation to the evidence they offer.

The first half of the nine days comprises a series of lectures covering the fundamentals of international maritime arbitration. They analyse legal concepts and issues arising during the course of a maritime arbitration. The later half of the Course deals with interim relief, emergency arbitrators, the aid given by an admiralty Court to maritime arbitrations, the practicalities of the hearing and the taking of evidence in resolving maritime disputes, and the enforcement of maritime arbitration awards.

In addition, during the week day afternoon sessions, participants take part in experiential group workshops under the guidance of experienced international arbitrators, and admiralty practitioners. Students will be given practical training in the conduct of international maritime arbitrations, and will discuss a range of problems which may arise in the course of an international maritime arbitration.

Following successful completion of the Diploma Course which entails attendance at the 9 day course, a practice & procedure examination and an award writing examination, candidates will be awarded a CIArb Diploma in International Maritime Arbitration. Successful candidates will also be eligible to become Fellows of the CIArb. The examinations are held a few months after the 9 day course.

The Course will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration in the newly refurbished Bangunan Sulaiman on Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin.
