Europe to Africa: Strait of Messina

The  Iberian and Italian Chapters of Ciarb Europe Branch present this in-person event in collaboration with the Madrid Bar Association, Barcelona Bar Association and Studio Legale Ovoli Frugoni.

The expert speakers will offer a comprehensive overview of two significant construction projects currently underway, though at different stages of development. Our focus will be on analysing the contracts governing these projects, particularly the dispute resolution clauses designed to prevent and manage potential conflicts. We will explore how these mechanisms operate and who is responsible for handling disputes when they arise.

This event serves as a preparatory seminar leading up to the ICCA 2026 Biennial Congress in Madrid, marking the first in a series of seminars focused on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the context of construction disputes.

The timing of this discussion is especially relevant, given that construction of the Messina Bridge began in June after 30 years of deliberation, while the Morocco underwater tunnel remains in the planning stages, influenced by strategic elements like the Morocco–Portugal–Spain 2030 FIFA World Cup bid and China's Belt and Road Initiative.

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the ADR processes in international construction contracts, specifically those linking Europe and Africa. The presentations will shed light on both the development of these projects and the role of ADR in resolving related disputes.
