Arbitration and Arbitral Institutions: Examining the CIArb connections
This is a joint webinar presented by the Iberian chapter of the European branch, and the United Arab Emirates branch.
The webinar will discuss the respective international arbitration institutions in the different regions. This is especially interesting within the context of the present situation of the DIAC and the opportunities it brings to the members of the Iberian chapter when it comes to expanding their presence and services.

Antonio Amusategui Batalla, Lawyer and Arbitrator, is a member in the Board of the European Branch of CIArb and Chair of The Iberian Chapter. He holds a Master's in Economics, Business Administration and Law.
His activity has been developed over more than three decades and is focused on planning ventures and investments, negotiation processes and dealing approaches in areas as real estate and urban land development, property assets and portfolios and advising on financial and monetary policies. Recently he has gained experience in blockchain, crypto and virtual assets and the art asset investment and advisory. He has also had a presence in ad-hoc multicultural and multitasked teams for achievements related to the above topics.
In the last few years he has assisted on financial and monetary policies, value channel and market innovation; and has taken a seat in virtual assets, blockchain, crypto industry and art investment sector and ventures.
From time to time, he supports third parties on the matters above.
Iryna is an Associate Director with HKA Dubai and a qualified Engineer with 15 years of experience. She specialises in contracts & quantum, assisting clients in any facet of contractual disputes in the infrastructure, construction, oil & gas, and energy sectors. Iryna acts as an arbitrator and also teaches International Arbitration for the CIArb. She is a Registered RICS Expert Witness and a frequent speaker at conferences in the ADR field.
Natalia Barroso is an Engineer and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, with significant experience in international construction arbitration. Prior to her involvement in delay analysis for dispute resolution purposes, she worked for over 15 years in Engineering and Construction mega projects as a project engineer and lead planning engineer. Since 2016 she has provided assistance to the appointed Delay Expert Witness across a broad spectrum of projects such as energy, oil & gas, mining and infrastructure projects. Natalia has a degree in mechanical engineering from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, a Master of Laws from Robert Gordon University and an MBA from IE Business School.
Sam Karim KC (Sheikh Mohammed Samiul Karim) is a specialist in domestic and international commercial arbitration. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is admitted as a practitioner in the DIFC and the ADGM. He acts as counsel, and more so recently sits as a panel or sole arbitrator. He speaks throughout the world on international arbitration including recently the IBA and GAR Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Paris and Legal 500 London. Sam is the editor of Karim on International Arbitration: The Global Guide for Practitioners, to be published this year by Elgar, and is also published in the area of AI & arbitration and Islamic finance. Sam also a panel arbitrator for the ADGM and the International Islamic Centre for Reconciliation.
Pavel Kalev is a senior Case Manager with the Dubai International Arbitration Centre. Prior to joining DIAC's team in 2018, he worked as an Attorney-at-Law in his home jurisdiction (Bulgaria), followed by a three-year tenure at a Dubai-based law firm, specializing in commercial matters with a focus on contracts and arbitration. Apart from his day-to-day work managing arbitration cases, at present Pavel actively contributes to the digital transformation of DIAC by developing its e-Case Management system, as well as to the overall growth of the Centre by developing rules, policies, and procedures. Pavel was a core member of the Task Force which drafted the new DIAC Arbitration Rules 2022.
Dr. Zeina Obeid is a Partner at Obeid & Partners, where she practices in the litigation & Arbitration Department. She has acted as lead counsel in major international arbitration cases across the Middle East and North Africa region. She also acts as arbitrator and as an administrative secretary in several domestic and international arbitrations, both ad hoc and under international institutional arbitral rules, including those of the ICC, DIAC, LCIA, CRCICA, BCDR-AAA, and DIFC-LCIA.
Zeina holds a PhD from the University Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) in France and an LLM from Columbia University in New York. She also holds a dual Master II in Business Law in the Arab Countries as well as in Arbitration & ADR obtained at the University Paris II and a Masters in Lebanese Law from the Lebanese University.
She frequently publishes articles on various topics notably in arbitration. In 2017, she published her book “Setting aside arbitral awards in the Arab Countries”, which has been cited as a reference book for practitioners around the MENA region.
Nazareth Romero is Partner at Ovoli Frugoni Romero, Head Arbitration and ADR specialising in commercial and investment Arbitration. Her area of practice includes. IP Rights, domain names, life sciences, white collar crimes in connection to international humanitarian law and crisis management.
She is a professor of Arbitration, ADR, Law & Economics and International Law. Mrs Romero is an External Expert at Directorate General Justice – European Commission.
Robert is a Barrister, Chartered Arbitrator, Mediator and Dispute Board Member with 35+ years’ experience of the construction and engineering industries, having initially qualified as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, and is able to provide a unique view of the worldwide ADR arena today.
Robert is associated with Alsuwaidi & Company (Advocates and Legal Consultants) based in Dubai, acting as independent legal Counsel representing clients in both domestic and international disputes.
Through ArbDB Chambers in London Robert acts as Arbitrator, Mediator, Adjudicator and Dispute Board Member. He has been involved in wide range of commercial and contractual disputes within the fields of construction, civil engineering, process plant, etc as well as general commercial disputes.
Robert is the current Chair of the UAE branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and works hard to promote all forms of ARD in the region.
