Abang Iwawan is a Partner at Abang & Co, where he specialises in International Arbitration and complex construction and engineering disputes, particularly in the infrastructure and energy sectors. His experience in the construction industry ranges from the early procurement strategy stage, contract drafting, advisory during the project life, through to dispute resolution. He is known for his pragmatic approach to matters and has been described in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific as a lawyer who “could provide definitive answers with conviction on his toes”.
Iwawan has represented clients in numerous arbitration and litigation proceedings arising from high-valued infrastructure projects, for a diverse clientele comprising of government-linked entities, independent power producers, and Fortune Global 500 companies. He also advises on the management of claims including disputed variation orders, defective works, extension of time, and additional payment claims, without the need for formal dispute resolution proceedings. Iwawan has performed this role on a number of substantial projects in his capacity as an ‘external in-house counsel’, aside from representing clients in key forms of dispute resolution in the construction sector, including statutory adjudication under the Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012 (CIPAA).
Iwawan also has extensive experience in Commercial Litigation, having appeared in the Malaysian Courts, up to the Federal Court, as Co-Counsel in complex commercial matters such as stock market manipulation, capital market misconduct and insider trading. He is a contributor to the Malaysian Civil Procedure (White Book) 2018, and The Legal 500 Construction Comparative Guide 2018.
Iwawan is the current President of the Young Society of Construction Law Malaysia.
