CIArb proudly supports the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress once again, and is delighted for the Scottish Arbitration Centre to win its bid for Edinburgh to host this biennial event in 2020.
ICCA President Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler invites all members of the international arbitration community to join the congress with this year’s theme ‘Arbitration’s Age of Enlightenment?’. The Congress theme was prepared by the Congress Programme Committee, which ICCA reported to be co-chaired for Edinburgh 2020 by Cavinder Bull, Loretta Malintoppi, and Constantine Partasides. The Programme Committee also consists of 16 members which includes CIArb members Ziad Obeid FCIArb, Jean Kalicki FCIArb, Lindy Patterson QC FCIArb, Susan Franck MCIArb, and Stephen Drymer MCIArb.
CIArb exclusively sponsors the ICCA Congress Gala Dinner, to be held in the remarkable National Museum of Scotland, which is expected to be the “social highlight of the congress and one of the most prestigious events in the international arbitration calendar”. Forefronted by the CIArb Scotland Branch, CIArb will deliver activities such as having an exhibitor stand during the conference and by planning a reception on 9 May 2020 for members of the Institute. CIArb Scotland Branch regularly liaises with the Faculty of Advocates, the Law Society, RICS and Scottish Government in relation to ICCA 2020.
Last year’s congress saw the participation of Doug Jones AO (ICCA 2018 Sydney Host Committee Member and CIArb Past President), Audley Sheppard QC FCIArb, Julian Lew QC FCIArb, Stavros Brekoulakis ACIArb, and Mohamed Abdel Wahab MCIArb.
Meg Kinnear, Member of ICCA Governing Board, commented:
“I am very much looking forward to the ICCA 2020 Congress. The program is tremendous, and raises a number of key issues for practitioners. In particular, the program with respect to investment arbitration addresses the discussions about reform that are on-going in almost every forum, and I believe they will be very useful.”
It is estimated that over 1,000 delegates will be in attendance at the 2020 ICCA Congress. We look forward to seeing members and colleagues at the CIArb stand on 10 – 13 May 2020 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Joint intervention success as Churchill judgment allows the courts to order parties to mediateIn a significant moment for mediation, the highly anticipated Churchill judgment overturns the decision in Halsey, confirming it is not a breach of human rights to integrate mediation into the court process and, where appropriate, to order parties to mediate. CMC, Ciarb and CEDR joined forces to intervene in the case, arguing strongly for this outcome.
