Resolving Intractable Inter-States Disputes: A Sisyphean Struggle?

Francis Xavier explores how inter-states disputes resolution work and what must change if we are to create a safer world. He will start with an overview of the mechanisms by which inter-states disputes are currently resolved. He will examine their efficacy as well as the serious gaps that are present before looking ahead to what must be done to work towards a better world for us all.

About the Alexander Lecture
The Alexander Lecture was founded in recognition of the contribution of Mr John Russell Willis Alexander (1897 - 1985) to the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. John Russell Willis Alexander served for 40 years as a member of Council and was elected President of the Institute of Arbitrators (as it was named at the time), from 1952 to 1955. This lecture is considered one of the most respected events in the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) calendar.
Francis Xavier is Rajah & Tann’s Regional Head of Disputes Group; he practises cross-border commercial litigation and international and treaty arbitration.
A veteran in the field, Francis has 33 years of legal practice and has a track record of being involved in novel and unprecedented cases. He has appeared before the SICC on numerous occasions (at both trial and appellate levels) and was in fact involved in the very first case heard before the SICC.
