Let’s Discuss is a series of virtual events brought to you by Ciarb. The series is free for Ciarb members.
Throughout the year we will be running a series of virtual events, hosted by members for members. These will get under the skin of the things that really matter in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) around the world and talk about the issues that matter to you. They will be a great opportunity to learn, discuss and meet new connections.
It’s up to you, our members to decide, what topics should be discusses. Leyla is a Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution Department at TripleOKLaw, LLP, Nairobi. She specializes in commercial litigation, intellectual property, employment & labour disputes, constitutional & human rights matters and disputes in the telecommunication and aviation sectors. She is a Notary public, Commissioner of Oaths, Certified Mediator, arbitrator and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. These diverse legal skill-set have enabled her to represent parties in mediation and arbitration proceedings, as well as sit as a mediator, sole arbitrator and Tribunal Secretary. She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya ADR Committee and serves as secretary of the African Users’ Council of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). She is the chairperson of Customs and Trade Facilitation Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (Kenya).
Leyla has been recognized consistently for her excellent work and expertise over the years in both litigation and arbitration. She emerged the winner, ‘Young Lawyer of the Year’ in the Law Society of Kenya Legal Awards, 2020 and was the 1st Runner Up in 2021. She also won ‘the Young ADR Practitioner of the Year Award, 2022 in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Kenya) Excellence Awards and was 1st Runner Up Young Arbitration Practitioner, 2023 in the 4th Africa Arbitration Awards. She was also crowned the Young Arbitrator of the Year 2023 by the African Arbitration Association.
She is a frequent speaker at ADR and trade conferences and webinars.
Rozana ALTayyar is an Independent Arbitrator and Mediator with extensive experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). With over a decade of expertise in her field specialising in handling complex and high-value commercial disputes. Rozana's focus areas encompass a diverse range of industries, including real estate, technology, family businesses, joint ventures, and the commercial sector.
She is a member of the national ICC committee in Saudi Arabia and Chair of Arbitration & ADR Committee , a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) and a member of the CIArb Steering Committee Saudi Arabian Branch. She is also a member of the advisory board of Princess Nora University, College of Law.
She was also featured at the LexisNexis Middle East Publication on 'Women in Law in the Arab World' 23 August 2022.
Dr Gloria Alvarez is an international academic on international dispute resolution, energy and investment law. She is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen in the UK and also works as arbitrator and has experience as president, sole and co-arbitrator.
Gloria has published numerous leading books, including Energy Arbitration in Latin America and sits in the Editorial Board of ICSID Review, Journal of International Arbitration and European Investment Law and Arbitration Review. Gloria is a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Lausanne and Osgoode Hall Law School.
She is currently working in two books, the first one: Arbitration in Mexico by Wolters Kluwer and a monograph on International Investment Arbitration in the Energy Transition. She is part of the CIArb Faculty at the Oxford Diploma in International Arbitration.
Manini has acted as arbitrator in more than 15 domestic commercial arbitrations, and also Amicus Curiae in matters of public importance, pursuant to appointments by the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi. Since 2022, she is also engaged as a Sr. Legal Consultant with the DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. In this role, she regularly advises on investment commitments in international treaties and related areas of policy.
Manini has been practicing in the areas of international law and arbitration, both commercial and investor-state, since 2010. Apart from these, her areas of expertise include infrastructure, real estate and corporate disputes. Previously, she worked as a Deputy Counsel with the Secretariat of the ICC Court of Arbitration (Hong Kong), and acted as Tribunal Secretary, counsel in international commercial arbitrations. She also advised on / represented the Government of India in investor-state disputes, including as a consultant with the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.
Manini obtained her Masters’ degree from the University of Cambridge, with a specialisation in Public International Law and Dispute Settlement. She taught a course on investment treaty arbitration as Guest Faculty, National Law University Delhi (2018). She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an empanelled arbitrator with the SIAC, THAC, a Board Member of Indian Women in International Arbitration practitioner’s group, and member of the Global Steering Committee of Young Arbitral Women Practitioners Group.
Catherine Dixon is the Chief Executive Officer of Ciarb. Catherine joined Ciarb in May 2020 having set the world record for circumnavigating the world on a tandem bicycle.
Before setting her world record, Catherine held Chief Executive Officer roles at NHS Resolution (the indemnifier for the NHS), a University College and at the Law Society of England and Wales.
Catherine also held Senior Executive Director, Legal Director and General Counsel roles at the NSPCC, BUPA and in Canada, at Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.
Catherine started her professional career as a commercial litigator solicitor in private practice including at Eversheds Sutherland.
Catherine has been involved in effective dispute resolution throughout her career including as an adviser, mediator, and client. Catherine formally introduced mediation into the NHS in England which has resulted in ADR being used effectively to resolve claims across the NHS.
She has served as a trustee and non-executive director on numerous boards, including the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), LawWorks, Queens (King) Counsels Appointments, Chamber of Commerce, Judicial Appointments, and other large charities. Catherine was the deputy chair of the LGBTQAI+ Committee of the IBA and has campaigned on human rights, rule of law and access to justice issues for most of her career. Catherine served as an officer on the British Army and has the Freedom of the City of London.
Catherine is the Chair of Stonewall, Europe’s largest human rights LGBTQ+ human rights charity.
Catherine has an MBA, is a solicitor and accredited mediator.
Moazzam Khan is a Delhi based litigator specializing in commercial and tech disputes. After attaining his degree in Law from Symbiosis Society’s Law College (Symbiosis International University), Pune, he started his career with Bhasin & Co (New Delhi) in 2007 before moving on to Nishith Desai Associates (NDA) in February 2012. Moazzam spent 10 years at NDA, 5 of them as Head-Global Litigation and HR Litigation. During his time at NDA, he also spearheaded its Internal Advocacy Unit aimed at mentoring young litigators of the Firm.
He represents clients across various sectors and industries including IT, Gaming, Manufacturing, Hospitality, Funds, PE, Aviation etc. His forte has been advising and representing clients on international commercial arbitrations, domestic as well as cross border litigations, enforcement of foreign awards and judgments and internal investigations.
Moazzam has extensive experience in arguing and handling disputes involving corporate commercial, white-collar, civil, intellectual property law issues before the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, various High Courts, various tribunals as well as International Arbitral Institutions.
Theominique D. Nottage, a Bahamian Counsel & Attorney-at-Law, has worked in both the public and private sectors with professional experience in civil, commercial and trusts litigation, intellectual property matters, environmental law and arbitration.
A 2015 Chevening Scholar, Theominique has a passion for international arbitration and has been extensively involved in several prominent professional organisations holding leadership positions (as the first Bahamian to do so) in Young International Council for Commercial Arbitration, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Young Members Group Global Steering Committee and the Institute for Transnational Arbitration Caribbean Task Force. She has been a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since January 2017.
Theominique has also published articles on arbitration in relation to commercial arbitration and trusts arbitration and most recently co-contributed a chapter to a book on diversity in international arbitration.
Theominique presently works as a Consultant to the Government of The Bahamas on matters of international arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution processes. In her role with the Government of The Bahamas, Theominique is responsible for the reform of the legislative framework to support arbitration, mediation and construction adjudication in The Bahamas and to establish The Bahamas as a preferred centre for arbitration in the Americas. She is considered a leading advocate for the use of alternative dispute resolution in not only The Bahamas but also the Caribbean and is a budding arbitration practitioner.
Zouhdi Yakan is a seasoned Partner at Law House, based in Abu Dhabi and overseeing the firm’s Dubai office as well, with over two decades of legal expertise, including significant tenure in the UAE. Specializing in corporate and commercial law, banking and finance, and dispute resolution, Mr. Yakan offers comprehensive advice on a wide range of business transactions, including setups, corporate structuring and restructuring, M&As, joint ventures, and the crafting and analysis of complex contracts. His legal expertise extends to a variety of sectors, including construction, architecture, commercial finance, banking (conventional and Islamic), insurance and brokerage, real estate, IT, employment, commercial agencies and more.
Zouhdi counsels and represents domestic and international clients in relation to UAE laws and regulations, compliance and corporate governance matters. At Law House, he leads the arbitration division, overseeing all aspects from initiation to the enforcement or annulment of awards, and provides guidance on alternative dispute resolutions and settlements.
He has also worked in the field of international arbitration in disputes involving international sales, banking, B.O.T. and construction (FIDIC) and engaged in arbitration hearings, including pleadings, examination, and cross-examination of witnesses across Lebanon, UAE, Paris, Geneva, and Lausanne. He is also a skilled mediator, and has mediated disputes in a variety of substantive areas and worked with the leaders of JAMS, the American Institute of Mediation, and the California Academy for Mediation Professionals, and has co-trained a 40-Hour Mediation Training organized by the American Bar Association and Pepperdine University in Jordan.
He has authored several articles, including a comparative study on the adoption of the UNCITRAL Model Law by Egypt and Tunisia. He also significantly contributed to the third Arabic edition of Dr. El Ahdab’s Encyclopedia of Arbitration (3 volumes). Furthermore, Zouhdi is a speaker at international conferences, where he shares his expertise in dispute resolution and other areas of law.
Zouhdi holds an LL.M. in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University, California, USA, a B.A. in Political Science from the Lebanese American University, and an LL.B. from the Lebanese University. He is a practicing attorney and a member of the Beirut Bar Association.
