Cristen Bauer
Director of External Affairs
Cristen is responsible for shaping Ciarb’s public voice, global policy influence and stakeholder engagement strategy. She and her team represent and amplify the voice of Ciarb’s members by engaging with global stakeholders to promote ADR, influence policy, and raise awareness of Ciarb’s role in the dispute resolution ecosystem. She also leads the development of resources that support members and ADR professionals in their practice and careers; and delivery of authoritative research and insights on global ADR trends and developments through publications.
Cristen specialises in international trade and investment law, digital regulation, and alternative dispute resolution. Prior to joining Ciarb, she was a Legal Advisor at the U.S. Department of Commerce in the Office of General Counsel where she worked in emerging markets on trade, investment, and commercial law reform. She has spent over a decade working in Southeast Asia, Africa, Central America, and Europe, including for the International Chamber of Commerce, the United Nations, a technology startup, and boutique investment arbitration firm.
She has experience working with governments, private sector, and international organisations on a range of issues including arbitration and mediation development, cybersecurity, e-commerce regulatory harmonisation, risk management for artificial intelligence projects, data sharing agreements, and data privacy. Cristen regularly speaks, writes, and publishes on technology and trade and dispute resolution issues, and her research on cybersecurity, digital assets, and investment treaty arbitration protection won her the 2021 Smit-Lowenfeld Prize from the International Arbitration Club of New York. Cristen is based in London and has an LL.M. in International Business and Economic Law from Georgetown University Law Center, a Juris Doctor from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University.
