Personal bio
Pedro Zelaya is an experienced arbitrator, listed with major arbitration centers in Chile and internationally, including the Madrid International Arbitration Center (CIAR-CIAM) and the New York International Arbitration Center. He has acted as a sole arbitrator in numerous cases and has extensive experience in complex disputes, particularly in infrastructure, construction, and concessions.
In 2023, he founded ZELAYA ETCHEGARAY Solución de Controversias, a boutique dispute resolution firm, where he serves as an independent arbitrator and expert in Chilean law. Recently, the Chilean Supreme Court appointed him to the list of experts eligible to serve as arbitrators or members of Arbitration Commissions in Public Works Concession Contracts.
For nearly 30 years, Pedro Zelaya was a founding partner of Larraín y Asociados, where he handled complex litigation and arbitration cases. His expertise spans civil liability, insurance, and arbitration, areas in which he has also published extensively.
Since 1993, he has been a professor of Civil Law at the Universidad de Chile and has taught specialization and postgraduate courses at several Chilean universities. His academic contributions further solidify his standing as a leading legal expert.
Pedro Zelaya earned his law degree from the Universidad de Chile in 1986. In 1989, he was awarded a scholarship for his doctoral studies at the Universidad de Navarra, with research stays at the University of Oxford. He obtained his Doctorate in Private Law in 1992.
He is an active member of professional organizations, including the Santiago Bar Association and the Chilean chapter of the International Insurance Law Association.
