Gulam has appeared in numerous cases across banking and finance, construction and infrastructure, real property, procurement, asset recovery and general civil liability. Key highlights of matters handled include: acting for the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa across several first instance and appellate post-arbitral proceedings for the recognition and enforcement in Uganda of a $156m New York Convention Award; acting for the Central Bank of Uganda in defence of a procurement-related dispute; and acting for a Canadian listed (TSX) mining firm against the Government of Uganda in proceedings for the setting aside of an arbitral award in which the arbitrator exceeded his mandate.

Acutely aware of the disruptive, costly, time-consuming and diversionary impact major disputes can have on businesses, Gulam works closely with clients to design effective forward-thinking dispute avoidance strategies, utilise alternative dispute resolution where appropriate, and navigate litigation and arbitration processes with expedition, precision, tact, and economic efficiency.
