Personal bio
Martha Mukupa Nalubamba is a Legal Practitioner with over 19 years practical experience both in private and as in-house counsel and is currently a Partner at D Bunting & Associates.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Zambia and a Master of Laws in International Business Law with merit, from the University of London through which she has acquired extensive knowledge in international investment and trade law as well as international commercial arbitration. Martha is actively engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution, as a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London and the Zambia branch from 2009 when she first joined. She has been appointed as sole arbitrator in contractual related dispute cases involving both public and private entities and one case she handled involved a dispute valued at over US$42million. She has also been engaged in arbitration as counsel for the parties, through which she handled various types of disputes which include construction contracts, labour related matters and general commercial contract disputes. In addition to this she has handled mediation cases on behalf of parties, a process through which she has sharpened her negation skills.
She was recently designated by the Government of the Republic of Zambia, to serve on the Panel of Conciliators for the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) World Bank Group, from May 2024 to May 2030.
Martha is also a seasoned Chartered Secretary/ Chartered Governance Professional who has attained the status of Associate the Chartered Governance Institute of United Kingdom and Ireland. She also currently serves as Independent Non-Executive Director on Boards in the banking sector, Insurance Industry and Non-Governmental organisations. She worked for over 8 years at senior management level, and in her role as Legal Counsel, she was involved in complex contract negotiation and drafting/ perfecting contracts and legal instruments, conveyances, sundry litigation, arbitration, labour, drafting and legislative review, and employment law related matters.
Martha’s past and current roles as a legal practitioner have been instrumental in the development of the skills that she has acquired as an arbitrator having been exposed to various areas of the law practice and ultimately gaining the designation to serve on the panel of the world’s leading organisation in international investment dispute resolution.
