Personal bio

Tarek El-Sewafy is a senior commercial, contracts, claims, and project controls executive with nearly two decades of interdisciplinary experience across major infrastructure, transit, power, industrial, civil, building, and complex capital projects.

He currently serves as Commercial and Contracts Director at Constrata Consultants, where he advises owners, contractors, developers, consultants, and legal teams on commercial strategy, contract governance, project controls, claims management, risk, and dispute resolution. As a claims and quantum expert, Tarek supports clients with entitlement assessment, quantum analysis, change and claims strategy, loss evaluation, dispute avoidance, and commercially grounded resolution of complex project issues. His work focuses on helping organizations achieve greater certainty by strengthening contractual discipline, improving commercial visibility, protecting commercial positions, resolving complex issues, and reducing dispute escalation.

Tarek’s experience spans both contractor-side and consultant/client-representative environments, giving him a balanced understanding of project delivery from multiple perspectives. He has supported major Canadian infrastructure programs, including a recent major transit/LRT program valued at approximately CAD 13 billion, where he contributed to commercial management, claims assessment, change management, project controls, dispute strategy, executive reporting, stakeholder coordination, and contract administration. His broader experience includes involvement in high-value dispute and claim-related matters approaching CAD 2.5 billion across complex projects, including delay, quantum, entitlement, cost, schedule, change, and contractual-risk issues.

Known for combining technical depth with executive-level commercial judgment, Tarek brings a practical, solution-oriented approach to complex project environments. He works closely with senior leadership, project teams, legal counsel, commercial managers, project controls professionals, and delivery partners to identify risks early, protect contractual positions, support informed decision-making, and drive commercially sound outcomes. He has supported multidisciplinary teams and major client-facing engagements where sustained performance, trust, and commercial discipline were critical to successful delivery.

Tarek holds a M.Sc. in Claims and Dispute Management, an MBA in Business Administration and Operations Management, and a B.Sc. in Project Management. He is also a Project Management Professional, Professional Quantity Surveyor, Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. His professional interests include construction claims, dispute boards, adjudication, mediation, arbitration support, project controls, commercial governance, and the improvement of dispute avoidance mechanisms in major capital projects.

In addition to his executive advisory work, Tarek contributes to the construction and dispute resolution profession through thought leadership, academic research, professional presentations, mentoring, and industry engagement. He is particularly focused on helping the construction industry move toward more proactive, transparent, and commercially disciplined approaches to project delivery, risk management, and dispute resolution.
