What is the aim of the course?

This course will explore how the principles of project management may be applied to the practice of international arbitration, and how such principles may help you to improve the cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of your arbitration services. 

What are the learning outcomes?

On successful completion of this course candidates will be able to:

  • Identify how project management principles can be applied in an arbitration context.
  • Explain the different stages of a project and the purpose of each stage .
  • Apply project management principles to the conduct of different stages of arbitral proceedings in professional practice, as appropriate.

What is covered in the Syllabus?

The course covers:

  • an introduction to Arbitration and Project Management,
  • the four stages of Project Management Principles,
  • the effective application of key Project Management terminology and tools to the legal services sector,
  • the practical challenges of implementing a new way of working.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered online and is self-paced. This means that candidates can study the available material at their own pace. This is an open-entry course. This means there is no specific start date.

How will I be assessed?

This course is not assessed. In order to receive a certificate of completion you must go through the entire content of the course this includes: watching the videos in full and completing all of the interactive exercises.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements and no prior knowledge of project management or its principles is required. The course is intended for candidates who:

  • are engaged in leading and running cases on a day-to-day basis
  • at Member/Fellow level
  • sit as counsel
  • are advisors involved in managing arbitration proceedings. 
  • are arbitrators wishing to improve the efficiency of their arbitral proceedings 


Candidates enrolling on any Ciarb course/assessment are required to ensure that their command of spoken and written English is adequate for the course/assessment for which they have applied. Ciarb does not require any evidence of this standard prior to enrolment on a course/assessment. However, it is the candidate's responsibility to ensure their English language skills are at a Professional Working Proficiency level, in order to meet the required standard when enrolling for any Ciarb course/assessment. It is recommended that candidates have achieved a standard that is, as a minimum, equivalent to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) level 7 or a score of 94-101 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) system. (Please note that we do not require an official IELTS or TOEFL result).

What is the course fee and what does it include?

The course fee is £15 inclusive of VAT.  The fee includes registration on the course and access to study materials.

What happens when I register for the course?

Upon successful registration on the course, candidates will receive confirmation they are booked on the course.  Joining instructions and course materials will be available on LearnADR approximately 3 days after successfully booking and paying for the course.

What is Ciarb’s policy on cancellation of courses?

Ciarb reserves the right to cancel or change the date, venue or content of programmes and the names of speakers, lecturers and tutors.  Candidates will be provided with adequate notice of any change.  If Ciarb has to cancel a course, candidates will be provided with a full refund or the opportunity to transfer their registration to the next course.  Should a candidate wish to cancel/defer their registration of a course, notification must be received in writing to education@ciarb.org.  Deferral charges apply.  Please refer to the Fee Terms and Conditions for full details.
