Requirements
If you’re interested in becoming an Associate member, you must complete one of the following qualifications as part of the pathways to Associate membership:
1. The Ciarb Assessment route - successfully complete any one of Ciarb’s Introduction modules assessments; *you must apply for membership within two years of completion.
2. The Recognised Course Provider route - successfully complete an accredited assessment with one of Ciarb’s active Recognised Course Providers (RCP); *you must apply for membership within two years of completion.
3. The Experience route – have a minimum of six months first-hand experience in dispute avoidance or dispute management in a professional capacity.

To apply for Associate membership via the experience route, you should have the following documents ready to be uploaded during the application process:
1. Your CV
Your CV should include:
- Contact information (email address and phone number);
- Education and qualifications;
- Work experience that reflects roles and responsibilities or an indication of your involvement in any process or procedure in ADR in a professional capacity;
- Your appointments or engagement records indicating first-hand experience in dispute avoidance or dispute management in a professional capacity;
- Certification and professional development;
- Publication and presentation records;
- Professional affiliations;
- Awards and honours;
- Records, if any, of ongoing learning activities - continuing professional development (CPD) or continuing legal education (CLE).
It should be in a PDF format.
DO NOT include:
- Assertations about your standing or reputation in the profession
- Details of earnings or income
- Photographs
2. Reference letter
You must submit a reference letter from an individual who can verify your minimum six months of experience in dispute avoidance or dispute management. The referee should have first-hand knowledge of your participation in the relevant process. Preferably, the referee should be an arbitrator, mediator or adjudicator.
The reference letter should:
- Be submitted on business-headed paper, addressed to Ciarb’s Head of Membership Services
- Be in PDF format
Referees must include their contact details (email address and telephone number) for us to contact them. Referees must provide a clear indication of their first-hand experience with you, including stating the type of dispute management or avoidance case, your capacity / role in the case, your contribution or involvement in the case, and the case outcome.
What does Associate membership cost?
All new membership applications must be accompanied by payment of the first year’s subscription fee and a one-off, non-refundable application fee. The application fee is £130 or £75, depending on your country of residence.
Ciarb membership is charged on an annual basis. Your first year’s subscription fee will be calculated on a pro-rata basis, depending on the date your application is submitted.
